1. Clogged Drain Hose
The drain hose can get kinked or clogged with lint, debris, or small items from pockets. Check the hose at the back of the machine and make sure it’s not bent or blocked.
2. Blocked Pump Filter
Most modern washers — including Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool models — have a pump filter that catches debris. If it hasn’t been cleaned in a while, it can block drainage completely.
Fix: Locate the filter (usually at the front bottom of the machine), place a towel down, and clean it out.
3. Faulty Drain Pump
If the drain pump itself is broken or worn out, the washer won’t be able to push water out regardless of what else you try. You may hear a humming noise during the drain cycle if the pump is struggling.
4. Lid Switch or Door Latch Failure
On top-load washers, the lid switch must be engaged for the machine to drain. If it’s broken, the washer will stop mid-cycle. On front-loaders, a faulty door latch can cause the same issue.
5. Control Board Issues
In some cases, the washer’s control board may fail to send the drain signal. This is more common in older GE, Frigidaire, and Maytag models.
